We are now in Playa. We will be here until 2/3. I sure it's too early for rates but we are wanting to come back next Jan. I noticed your monthly rate at $1200 USD. Are there any additional charges?

I noticed that there is a CFE automated cash teller in the Plaza Pelicanos Mall on Ave 10 and Calle 8. It's not easy to find. It is somewhat hidden in the southwest corner of the mall on the ground floor near the doors accessing Calle 8.

I think it's also important to note that you must register your phone. Otherwise you won't be able to transfer your balance or your phone number to the new phone! Many expats don't
register their phones because they fear having to do it in Spanish. If you keep getting an annoying message everytime you make a call beginning with "Estimado usuario ...", then you need to register!

Other good options are dive industry related. If you are an open water PADI instructor or a NACD Cave Diving guide or instructor, there are plenty of jobs.

If you speak more than just English, that's a plus. One of my friends here works as a dive instructor and she's South African. She speaks English and Afrikaans (similar to Dutch) so she instructs in Dutch quite a bit. My other friend is French Canadian (but Portuguese by descent) so she teaches diving mostly in French and sometimes in Portuguese. She also speaks Spanish and English fluently, so she's pretty marketable.

I would suggest getting certified to teach English or becoming a PADI Open Water Instructor before coming here unless you can fund your time here while you learn, which can be up to a year for the PADI instructors license.

We are retired and had no problem getting our FM3s in Miami. I have heard that at some Consulates it is more difficult to get an FM3 prior to departure if you are not retired. However, we have many friends here who are not retired and who have FM3s. My recommendation is to bring your documentation and complete the FM3 process here. It's a process, but it's not much more difficult than registering an FM3 issued by a consulate in the US.

Another option is to live here on a tourist Visa. Many people live here for years exiting the country every six months then returning for another 180 day stamp.

Don't be discouraged. If you really want to be here long term it will work out.

Hi! We're moving to Playa in January (I know, high season. ugh). We were told at the Consulate in New York that you could only get FM3s if you were retired and had the required income coming in from Social Security (even if you were a millionaire). Others have told us it's easier to get one in Mexico. While we'd love to be retired, we're only in our early 30's so it doesn't look like it's going to happen soon. Was that your experience?
