Playacar is a gated community just south of the main urban area of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. There is beach front property and beaches that looks toward the island of Cozumel, Mexico. Playacar is composed of 2 sections: the first one, Playacar Phase 1 offers nice by-the-sea secluded beaches and very exclusive villas, very close to downtown Playa del Carmen. The second, Playacar Phase II, was built around a golf course designed by Robert von Hagge, with all inclusive resorts and private villas all around.

Playacar is home to many locals and expats. It is also home to several All Inclusive resorts that dominate the beach areas south of Playa del Carmen. There is a public beach in Playacar Fase I. Your housing choice are many in Playacar with popular condos and townhomes as well as single family homes and villas.

Playacar is considered an upscale area to live and also a more secure area to live although there are diverse opinions about the security advantages.

The Playa Mega or Walmart?

Walmart? You know Walmart and it’s not all that different in Playa del Carmen. However, there is a Mexican alternative called the Mega or Mega Market. It’s a big store, clean, and well stocked. It’s more than groceries; you will also find a beer, wine, liquor including Mexican Tequila, pharmacy, bakery, deli, hot food service, pizza shop, coffee shop, appliances, electronics, and a decent selection of packaged hardware.

PROPOSAL TO CHANGE FEES

On February 9, 2010, the Department of State proposed fee increases for American Citizen Services. The fee increase is currently in a “period for public comment” and would take effect later this year.

In particular, passport services fees will increase as follows:

Passport Renewal for adults– $75 to $110.

First-time Passport Application or Replacement of Lost/Stolen Passport from $100 to $135.

Passport for Minors: from $85 to $105

Report of Birth Abroad $65 to $100

Also, an $82 fee is proposed for adding passport pages.

You can find the complete list of proposed new fees at our website: http://merida.usconsulate.gov. (use specific site where it is located). You will be able to follow a link on that site to comment up to March 10, 2010.

You may renew your passport at any time by making an appointment with the Consulate at http://merida.usconsulate.gov/merida/passports.html.

There is a Consular Agent Office in Playa del Carmen that is an extension of the Consulate in Merida. It’s located on block south of Juarez on Calle 1 Sur between Ave 15 and 20 as I recall. There is also a Consular Agent in Cozumel.
